Alison Bechdel Tomorrow Night for Writers in the Loft
“Magnificent…Grade: A” – Entertainment Weekly
Ticket package includes book, bar beverage,
and author meet-and-greet/signing
The Music Hall’s Writers in the Loft series welcomes graphic novelist Alison Bechdel with her latest work, ARE YOU MY MOTHER? A Comic Drama, on Thursday, June 14, 2012. The 7pm event will be held at the Music Hall Loft located on 131 Congress Street, Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
Six years ago, Bechdel published Fun Home, a memoir of her relationship with her father. It was an international literary and pop culture phenomenon: Time magazine’s No. 1 Book of the Year, and it hit almost every other “best book of the year” list as well. And Fun Home was on top of Bechdel’s already deep cult status as creator of the Dykes to Watch Out For comic strip.
Now, Are You My Mother? is the sequel her readers have been waiting for, another brilliantly told tale of filial sleuthery, this time about Bechdel becoming the artist her mother herself wanted to be.
““You won’t believe it until you read it–and you must!” – Gloria Steinem
A voracious reader, music lover, and passionate amateur actor, Bechdel’s mother is also a woman who was unhappily married to a closeted gay man, and whose artistic aspirations simmered under the surface of Bechdel’s childhood. And she’s a mother who stopped touching or kissing her daughter goodnight, forever, when she was seven years old.
“We’ve presented a large variety of authors in the Loft, from Pulitzer Prize and National Book award winners to thought leaders on introspection, from historians to hysterics. Alison Bechdel is like no other. A recent in-depth profile in the New Yorker magazine showed why she continues to be a trailblazer – her vision and her creativity are unique, truly powerful, and I can’t wait to have her share them in the Loft,” said Margaret Talcott, Associate Producer of Writers on a New England Stage.
