Bluegrass songstress and virtuoso mandolin player Sierra Hull, called a “prodigious talent” by The New York Times, is coming to Portsmouth in October! The Music Hall, the performing arts center featuring curated entertainment from around the world in two theaters in its downtown Portsmouth, New Hampshire campus, welcomes her to the Loft for two performances on Sunday, October 23 at 7pm and 9pm. Tickets are on sale to members noon Saturday September 17 and to the public at noon Saturday October 1.

A child prodigy, Hull began playing the mandolin at the age of eight and two years later produced a self-released CD, Angel Mountain, receiving national acclaim as a bluegrass prodigy. She was only 11 when she debuted at the Grand Ole Opry and the now-legendary Alison Krauss took notice of Hull’s talents and became her mentor. By the time she hit her teens, she was signed to the venerable New England roots label Rounder Records – it was 2008 when Hull was just 15 that Krauss co-produced Hull’s debut album on Rounder Records, Secrets. Earlier this year, Krauss co-produced her second album on Rounder Records, Daybreak. “Success could not come to a more worthy person. I adore her,” says Krauss.

Nominated last month by The International Bluegrass Music Association for Emerging Artist of the Year and for Mandolin Player of the Year, Hull is touring with her band behind her new album, Daybreak, which features a 12-song collection including seven songs composed by Hull, and features collaborations with Bryan Sutton on guitar and Randy Kohrs on dobro, as well as guest singers Dan Tyminski, Shawn Lane, and Ronnie Bowman.

“Sierra Hull is an amazing musician who is on the cusp of becoming a widely recognized name,” says Thérèse LaGamma, Deputy Director of Programming & Curator, The Music Hall. “Patrons won’t soon forget her mellifluous voice, captivating lyrics, and incredibly nimble mandolin playing. We are thrilled to welcome her to her Loft debut.”
