Big Wednesday is both the title of the Wildcard Movie February 18 and the theme for the entire evening as The Music Hall celebrates the Seacoast Surf Scene with back to back events. Big Wednesday starts off at 5pm with Scene@Five, held monthly in the new Beaux Arts Founders Lobby. Patrons can watch vintage footage of the ‘60s Seabrook surf scene and listen to “comfortable grooves” laid down by live band (and local surfers) Todo Bien, all while sipping a signature surf cocktail at the lobby concessions bar. At 7pm, the party moves upstairs for a 30th anniversary screening of what is widely considered to be one of the best surf movies of all time, Big Wednesday. Surf’s up!
According to Chris Greiner, Music Hall Box Office Manager (and surfer) who orchestrated the event, “OK, it’s the middle of February. You’re driving to the beach, heat cranked, surfboard strapped hopefully to your roof rack, and the sky’s a thick and foreboding gray. Surf report pegs the sea and air temps at 35 degrees, not to mention the stiff onshore breeze. You pull into the lot and jump out of the car (hypothermia be damned!) only to discover the waves are junk. Just when you thought winter would never end, The Music Hall brings some relief. February 18 is BIG Wednesday, where the sand is warm, the water’s balmy, offshores are light, and the surf is starting to barrel.
At 5pm there’ll be a special surfside edition of Scene@Five, featuring vintage footage of the ‘60s Seabrook surf scene and ‘comfortable grooves’ laid down by live band (and local surfers) Todo Bien.
