Writers on New England Stage, the celebrated author series presented by The Music Hall and New Hampshire Public Radio, announced two additions to its all-star list of authors for Fall 2009. On Monday, December 1, the celebrated storyteller Stephen King will take the stage to discuss his new novel Under The Dome. Greg Mortenson joins this series on Friday, December 4 to present Stones Into School, a work of nonfiction that follows closely on his heralded work of nonfiction Three Cups of Tea, which remains a bestseller.
“Since 2005, Writers on New England Stage has presented and celebrated the success of America’s highest achieving and best-loved authors, showcasing their creativity and sharing their work in a unique stage format. This fall, as we enter our fifth season, we’re building on that tradition, presenting five stand-out successful writers across several categories. Their inspired new works, ranging from heart-pounding thrillers to can-do works of nonfiction, shine a light on America today – who we are, inside and out. This brilliance is what draws such strong audiences and furthers the series’ mission, which is not just to entertain, but to engage our reader-audiences in thought and dialogue,” said Writers on a New England Stage executive producer Patricia Lynch, also executive director of The Music Hall.
Also appearing in the Writers on a New England Stage series this fall: the great American chronicler and novelist E.L. Doctorow, on September 30; Tracy Kidder, the Pulitzer Prize winning master of nonfiction, on October 19; and the acclaimed bestselling author Barbara Kingsolver, on November 3. Each author’s presentation will be followed by an interview with either NPR veteran newscaster Laura Knoy, host of New Hampshire Public Radio’s “The Exchange” or Virginia Prescott, host of NHPR’s “Word of Mouth.” Live music will be performed by the award-winning house band Dreadnaught. The live shows will be rebroadcast on New Hampshire Public Radio.
“Our audiences drawn from throughout New England are in for a real treat. Many have said these authors, one or even two of them, have changed their lives and their view on the world. We’re delighted to welcome five such extraordinary and treasured writers to the series. It is an honor to introduce their new work,” said Associate Producer Margaret Talcott.
Stephen King is the author of more than fifty books, all of them worldwide bestsellers. His most recent books include Just After Sunset and Duma Key. The publisher reports that his coming work Under the Dome “will thrill every reader who’s ever loved a novel by King.”
Greg Mortenson’s inspirational work Three Cups of Tea was a #1 New York Times bestseller and has been published in 29 countries. His dramatic first person narrative Stones into School picks up where Three Cups of Tea left off in 2003, recounting his tireless ongoing efforts to establish schools for girls in Afghanistan.
Writers on a New England Stage was created by executive producer Patricia Lynch, also executive director of The Music Hall, and is presented in partnership with New Hampshire Public Radio and in collaboration with Portsmouth’s independent RiverRun Bookstore. The series has previously spotlighted authors Alan Alda, Mitch Albom, Doris Kearns Goodwin, Dan Brown, Anita Diamant, Madeleine Albright, the late John Updike, Wally Lamb, and Cokie Roberts, among many others.
