Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra: Mahler & Student Soloist
Join the Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra under the direction of John Page for a performance of the first movement of Sibelius’ Violin Concerto featuring the winner of our Seacoast Student Concerto contest, Laurel Gagnon. Also on the program will be Gustav Mahler’s monumental Symphony No. 1 in D Major. Premiered in Budapest in 1889 and initially criticized for pushing the boundaries of the symphonic form with its length and expanded ranks, Mahler’s first symphony has become one of his most enduring and popular works.
Join us for a pre-concert lecture at 2pm.
