I first met Kim Richey when I was a student at the Berklee College of Music and made a special trip down to Nashville with a group of students. She was a guest speaker at a studio in Nashville’s Music Row. Kim’s down to earth persona and stories of coming to music later in life were inspiring. As her career progressed, she wrote songs that eventually found their way to artists like Trisha Yearwood and the Dixie Chicks—and garnered her a Grammy nomination. She comes to town on Sunday, April 15 to promote her latest album Edgeland and to perform as part of our Live at The Loft series. Read on for our recent conversation about life, music, and songwriting.Read More

If you are a fan of emerging artists and discovering new acts, then you’ll want to check out our Live at the Loft series. This series is a broad mix of world, country, and pop music. March in New England brings with it the promise of sunnier days, and it is also when I travel to Austin’s South By Southwest (SXSW) to seek out new acts to bring to the Seacoast. This festival and conference features thousands of artists from across the globe in venues around the city. SXSW artists are both renowned (Iggy Pop and Loretta Lynn) and lesser known. Stages are curated by a variety of industry names (KCRW, NPR, Brooklyn Vegan) as well as agencies who take special care in helping to develop young artists.Read More

I can tell by that clock on the wall that February is running on fumes, that March is imminent, and that (with the Winter Olympics over) the Oscars will be popping up at high volume in every form of media known to humankind.
In other words: Heaven.
For me, watching Call Me By Your Name will represent a clean sweep of the nine films nominated for Best Picture. And I’ve got to say I’m intrigued. It’s not often that we get a gay summer romance film picking up nominations for Best Picture, Best Actor (Timothee Chalamet), Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Song. Well, not since Brokeback Mountain, anyway.Read More

Okay, it’s time to cut the chatter and get serious. The Oscars will be broadcast on March 4 and some of you may have some homework to do to catch up with the nominees for Best Picture and such.
As usual, The Music Hall is here to help. On Tuesday night, we will be discussing Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, a film that boasts not only a Best Picture nomination, but also one for Lead Actress (Frances McDormand), two Supporting Actor noms (Woody Harrelson and Sam Rockwell), one for Best Original Screenplay, another for Film Editing and, just for variety, one for Original Score.Read More
