Dinner Before the Show in Portsmouth
If you’re heading to The Music Hall, it’s worth making a full night of it. Portsmouth is one of those places where dinner and a show just naturally go together. Everything is close, most places are walkable, and the whole downtown area feels lively on performance nights.
If a friend were visiting and asked where to eat before a show, these are the spots I’d point them toward. All are local Seacoast restaurants within walking distance or a short drive from The Music Hall.

Romantic Dinner Before the Show
A lot of Portsmouth date nights start with dinner before walking over to the theater.
Jumpin’ Jay’s Fish Cafe
A longtime Portsmouth favorite for oysters and fresh seafood. The dining room feels warm and classic without being formal, and locals often think of it as one of Portsmouth’s most reliable romantic restaurants for a dinner before the show. It’s just a 2-minute walk to The Music Hall, which makes the timing easy.
Nichinan
Tucked right around the corner from the theater, Nichinan is about a 1-minute walk from The Music Hall. The room is calm and dimly lit, the sushi is beautifully prepared, and the whole place has a quiet, intimate energy that makes it a great spot to settle in for a relaxed dinner before the show.
If You Want Something Lively
If you’d rather start the night somewhere energetic, these spots have a little more buzz before curtain.
Moxy
Creative small plates, strong cocktails, and a lively dining room that usually feels like the start of a fun night out. It’s about a 6-minute walk to The Music Hall, and the patio is great during the warmer months.

Colorful, casual, and packed with bold global street food. It’s about a 5-minute drive from The Music Hall and offers onsite parking, which can make things easier on busy show nights. There’s also a patio during warmer months.

These places are great if you’re looking for something comfortable and unhurried before the performance.
Nisi Greek Kitchen & Bar
A West End spot inspired by the flavors of Greece with lots of shareable dishes. It’s about a 5-minute drive to The Music Hall, with onsite parking and a patio when the weather is nice.

Don’t be afraid to cross the river; Ore Nell’s is worth the short trip. It’s about a 3-minute drive from The Music Hall, or a 15-minute walk across the Memorial Bridge, which is a beautiful walk on a clear evening. There’s onsite parking and a patio overlooking the Piscataqua River.
Liars Bench Beer Company
A relaxed neighborhood brewery in Portsmouth’s West End with great craft beer and a spacious beer garden. It’s about a 13-minute walk to The Music Hall, and there’s parking onsite if you’re driving.
On Your Way Into Town
If you’re coming from outside Portsmouth, here’s an easy stop before heading downtown for the show.
Vida Cantina
Located along Route 1, Vida is a good stop if you’re coming from the south. Expect vibrant tacos, bold flavors, and excellent margaritas. It’s about a 10-minute drive to The Music Hall, with onsite parking and a patio in warmer months.
Short on Time?
If you’re coming straight from work or don’t have time for a full sit-down dinner, a lot of restaurants downtown offer takeout. You can even bring takeout into The Music Hall Members Club and enjoy it there before the performance.
Ordering ahead can make the evening feel relaxed instead of rushed.
When to Make Reservations
For evening performances, dinner about 90 minutes to two hours before showtime usually works well. That gives you time to enjoy the meal and still walk over to the theater comfortably.
On weekends or for big shows, reservations are a smart move.

Make It a Weekend
