Show & Tell: Cold War

All:

We live in New England, which means that spring is, as usual, dragging its feet. It’s still too early to plant a garden and sunbathing is far in the future. If you find this kind of weather ideal for going to the movies and you’re in the mood for a disposable comic-book movie at the Mall-Plexx 95, you’re in luck. Captain MarvelShazam!, and Hellboy will fix you right up. If horror is your thing, Pet Sematary and Us should do the trick. And if you have an appetite for animated fare, How to Train Your Dragon and Missing Link are certainly animated as heck.

But if you’re pining for an adult love story, your choices are pretty slim.

Unless that is, you’re used to going to movies at The Music Hall. Because we have a real pearl of a romance playing there now.

Love is never easy, especially not in the movies. And, as you can imagine, that’s especially true in a ruined country like Poland just after the Second World War. But that doesn’t keep two people from trying in Pawel Pawlikowski’s highly praised love story, Cold War.

You may remember Cold War as a film that got three Academy Award nominations (including Best Foreign Language Film and Best Director) and appeared almost unanimously on critic’s 2018 Top Ten lists. Or maybe you were struck by the atmospheric black & white photography of its trailer and the stunning good looks of its leading couple.

Whatever you remember, I think you’ll want to take this golden opportunity to catch this cool, jazz-inflected romance that that stretches across 15 years and at least four countries. And this may be your last chance to see this epic love story—one of the critical darlings of the year—on a big screen like the one in the Historic Theater of The Music Hall.

Cold War isn’t long, not quite making it to 90 minutes, but it packs a major punch.

And I think you will also enjoy a chance to talk about love, about black & white movies, and about Pawlikowski’s other movies in the film discussion that will follow Tuesday’s 7:00 showing in the Historic Theater. The Music Hall will supply the movie, the free coffee and popcorn, and the big screen and I’ll lead the discussion.

I hope to see you there.
