One of the most celebrated writers of our time, Rushdie catapulted to worldwide fame in 1989 when the Ayatollah Khomeini declared his novel The Satanic Verses” offensive to Islam and issued a “fatwa” that sentenced him to death. For the next 10 years, Rushdie lived in hiding under the pseudonym Joseph Anton. The thought struck yesterday as I was listening to Exec Director Patricia Lynch talk about upcoming social events at The Music Hall, and how the dearth of social gatherings in corporate America today (whatever happened to those family picnics? to after-work cocktails?) has caused people to come out not only to our shows but to our social and educational events.
