Discovering Tarbell

I thought I was pretty well versed in Impressionist artists until I saw this exhibit. I was surprised to learn that one of the most influential artists of the last century called New Castle home for nearly 30 years. The beautifully curated shows captures the spirit of the artist by highlighting his love of his family, friends, horses, and the landscape that surrounded him all while telling the story of who he was as a person.

Tarbell

When Tarbell passed away, his obituary read “Edmund Tarbell contributed to America’s place in the world of art. To him and his work Europe turned its eyes in admiration, as did the whole people in America. Tarbell’s works were honest works. In him was none of the transient sensationalism which brought notoriety to others. Tarbell canvases will be speaking to the world centuries from now. His character was as true as his art.”  After experiencing this amazing exhibit I’d say that prediction is true.

While you’re there, make sure to head upstairs to see the companion show, Illuminating Tarbell: Legacy in Action. A collection of about 50 works from six contemporary painters highlights the influence that Tarbell still has over young painters.

The exhibit runs now until Friday June 3.
