Catching Up with Kim Richey Uncategorized

Catching Up with Kim Richey

I first met Kim Richey when I was a student at the Berklee College of Music and made a special trip down to Nashville with a group of students. She was a guest speaker at a studio in Nashville’s Music Row. Kim’s down to earth persona and stories of coming to music later in life were inspiring. As her career progressed, she wrote songs that eventually found their way to artists like Trisha Yearwood and the Dixie Chicks—and garnered her a Grammy nomination. She comes to town on Sunday, April 15 to promote her latest album Edgeland and to perform as part of our Live at The Loft series. Read on for our recent conversation about life, music, and songwriting. Read More Read More
Music is in the Air and Spring’s on the Way (Promise) In Brief

Music is in the Air and Spring’s on the Way (Promise)

Music is in our name. It’s in our DNA. Our curators have made sure that we have a ton of great music coming up this spring, from Josh Ritter, Michael McDonald, Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite, and Melissa Etheridge to name a few. It seems like every week we’re announcing new shows and they’re going on sale to our members…quickly. It is understandable that one might escape your notice (Pro-tip: sign up for our enews to get those announcements). Plus, we are fortunate that, in addition to our own programming, we have organizations that rent our spaces for their shows. Read More Read More

Film discussion: Sing Street

Well, it’s time to get serious about this movie stuff! We have three straight weeks of discussions coming up in July, and the movies themselves, are (I think) all perfect for summer evenings. There’s not a gut-clenching moral dilemma, haunting historical tragedy or blood-soaked shoot-out in the bunch. Read More Read More
My Music Hall, My Community Community

My Music Hall, My Community

Monte & Denise Wheeler look out over the 5 tons of food collected for the Seacoast Family Food Pantry at the Summer’s Fill the Hall Food Drive. For me, one of the most rewarding parts of my job is seeing and getting to know the broad array of artists that we are fortunate enough to work with. Artists that are internationally renowned, local, regional, new, or new to me. With the addition of the Loft almost five years ago, we have been able to program even more local and regional talent. I am always excited to discover new music and meet the artists. My job puts me in a unique position to do that just about every week. Read More Read More

Rising Star Brett Dennen Dishes on Life, Music, and Nature

If you make the time to listen to the songs on Brett Dennen’s latest work, Smoke and Mirrors, you will likely have difficulty sitting still. His songs, fast climbing on the Billboard charts, are lively and energetic. Brett has toured with John Mayer, Michael Franti, and Jack Johnson. His enthusiasm for music, his art, and his life on the road are apparent. He’s had a busy summer playing the festival circuit and shows no signs of slowing down. I was able to catch up with him in between shows. Here’s a snippet of that conversation. Please join us on Wednesday, October 22 in the Historic Theater as Brett makes his debut appearance in Portsmouth, NH! Read More Read More
