Let’s Do Something About Poverty, Together

Sitting in a coffee shop in Portsmouth earlier this week I was discussing our upcoming Let’s Talk About Poverty event with the panelists, Beth Mattingly Director of Research on Vulnerable Families at The University of New Hampshire’s (UNH) Carsey School of Public Policy, Kristy Martino, from, Deborah Anthony, Executive Director of Seacoast Family Food Pantry, and Craig Welch, Executive Director of the Portsmouth Housing Authority. The topics: what each of these four panelists would be presenting; how the event was going to work; how we were going to talk about what can seem like an overwhelming problem, and how we can take action. We talked for over an hour and a half about everything from causes to challenges, from simple fixes to systemic problems. Read More Read More

Warren Miller Road Crew Delivers More Than Just Entertainment

Ashleigh Tucker Pollock and I got a chance to take an icy dip in the Atlantic this afternoon with the road crew from Warren Miller. The crew, Dan Ohnsman, Sid Howard, Andrew Parker, and Colin Barry spend their fall on the road doing the great work of getting everyone excited about the ski season that is coming downhill at us fast. Monte & Ashleigh post-plunge. While they are in town, they are not just here for the show. The Portsmouth Polar Plunge is also a food drive for The Rotary Club Thanksgiving Dinner. Every year this crew spends their Thanksgiving on the Seacoast away from their families. While many folks would hole up in their hotel, or pine for the mountains or home, they volunteer their time at the Turkey Dinner. And they have done this without fanfare for the last three years. We are so grateful for a fun bunch that also gives back. Thanks guys! Catch Warren Miller Chasing Shadows on the big screen tonight, Wednesday Nov. 25 at 6 or 9pm. More info/tickets  About the Portsmouth Rotary Thanksgiving Dinner 44th Annual Portsmouth Rotary Thanksgiving Dinner will take place Thursday, November 26 at 11:30 am at St. Nicholas Greek Church (adjacent to Portsmouth High School). My Music Hall, My Community Community

My Music Hall, My Community

Monte & Denise Wheeler look out over the 5 tons of food collected for the Seacoast Family Food Pantry at the Summer’s Fill the Hall Food Drive. For me, one of the most rewarding parts of my job is seeing and getting to know the broad array of artists that we are fortunate enough to work with. Artists that are internationally renowned, local, regional, new, or new to me. With the addition of the Loft almost five years ago, we have been able to program even more local and regional talent. I am always excited to discover new music and meet the artists. My job puts me in a unique position to do that just about every week. Read More Read More
